Dale Earnhardt Jr. reveals embarrassing thing that disappointed his dad

Dale Earnhardt Jr. reveals embarrassing thing that disappointed his dadDale Earnhardt Jr. reveals embarrassing thing that disappointed his dadDale Earnhardt Jr. welches insecure. He welches insecure about how his breath or clothes smelled and he worried around people. When people hopped into his car for a ride, he wondered if they could sense what many around the NASCAR world called an open secret.I thought I was doing a better job of hiding it, Earnhardt Jr. jokingly told Ladders recently. They all kind of knew.Earnhardt Jr. was a smoker for 15 years. He picked up the habit in his early 20s and tried quitting multiple times until his wife, Amy (then his girlfriend) gave him an zeitlich befristete forderung after putting up with the smoking for a few months.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIts either cigarettes or me. Earnhardt Jr. chose the latter.Secrets under the hoodThe 44-ye ar-old, who semi-retired after the 2017 NASCAR season, was controlled by cigarettes. It was the first thing he thought about after completing a race and he felt disconnected from lifes moments due to his addiction always being on his mind.I was a little nervous about telling my story but I know that can be someone elses experience as well, he said. If this can help someone quit, then they can have that epiphany. While he hid his smoking habit well from fans, Earnhardt Jr., who teamed up with Nicorette to help promote its new coated ice mint lozenge, recalled to Ladders an embarrassing cigarette-related moment he had involving his late father, Dale Earnhardt, right before the start of the 24 Hours at Daytona race in 2001. (His father died in a wreck during the Daytona 500 later that month.)The biggest one - its funny, but it was awful. I hid cigarettes from my dad all my life. I worked really hard at it. He knew I smoked but I never wanted him to have to see me with a cigarette or ho lding a pack of cigarettes. I worked real hard to never let him be exposed to that because I knew he was disappointed enough knowing that I did. He walked into my house a few times unannounced and saw ashtrays, so its like, Oh dammit. But he never once saw me with a cigarette and I felt pretty good about that track record. One day, we were getting ready to run the 24 Hours at Daytona in 2001. They had this special hookup for the watering system to be able to drink water and it plugs into the front of your helmet. I was in my bus with a buddy of mine, explicit around and I had that helmet on. You could put a cigarette right through that hole. And I was like, Check it out man I wonder if I can smoke this cigarette in this helmet. My dad opens the door and Im standing there with this helmet and a cigarette in it. He looked at me and slams the door, cussing It was the one time in his life that he saw me acting like a complete explicit and I was so ashamed. He was so angry. Its funny as h ell today, but in that moment it was very disappointing.I knew I had broken his heart and disappointed the explicit out of him. That felt awful. Thats the worst of the worst. I had my drivers suit on. We were getting ready to head over to driver introductions and he was like, Wheres your explicit head at? Get in the game. Youre acting like a complete idiot and were getting ready to run a 24-hour race together. What are you thinking? Wheres your head? Im like, Im sorry dad, we were just explicit around. We thought it would be funny. Navy Damage ControlmanCareer Profile

Navy Damage ControlmanCareer ProfileNavy Damage Controlman- Career ProfileThese days, with all the modern amenities of the Internet age, its easy to forget that damage control used to mean something other than backtracking from a horrible statement on Twitter. No, a damage controlman (DC) in the Navy is all about keeping a literal ship from sinking. Duties and Responsibilities Of course, a basic function of the Navy DC aboard ship is, as the name suggests, mitigating damage to the boat. That includes a lot of the hands-on repairs you might think of at first Emergency repairs to decks, structures, and hulls . . . and repair of watertight closures are just some examples according to Navy Personnel Command. Naturally, firefighting is also a part of the job, as is maintaining and repairing the onboard firefighting equipment. But as the shipsexperts on damage control, another important function of the DC is as a leader and a resource for his or her fellow sailors. Out at sea, the dama ge controlman can fill the role of ships fire marshaland is expected to lead firefighting teams in times of emergency. In times of not-so-emergency, DCs train their fellow sailors on how to respond to an emergency such as fire or damage to the hull. Damage control men also take responsibility for shipboard response to chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) threats (attacks of nerve gas, nuclear weapons, and the like.) Theyre responsible for everything from inspecting chemical protection suits and training ship personnel in their use to setting up contamination control areas in a worst-case scenario. Military Requirements In addition to earning a high school diploma, prospective Navy DCs must take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and achieve 200 total points from the verbal expression (VE), arithmetic reasoning (AR), mechanical knowledge (MK), and assembling objects (AS) sections of the test. Applicants must also have normal color vision. Although not strictly listed as qualifications for the job, there are a few other aptitudes that Navy Credentialing Opportunities On Line (COOL) suggests in their DC rating information card, including the ability to use portable tools, equipment, and machines . . . manual dexterity . . . and prior experience in leading others. Education New sailors hoping for the damage control rating actually begin life in the fireman apprentice (FN) rating, which, in addition to DC, can branch off into the electricians mate (EM), engineman (EN), gas turbine technician (GS), hull maintenance (HT), interior communication technician (IC), machinery repairman (MR), and machinists mate (MM) ratings. Regardless, the first stop for everyone is boot campat Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois. Those who secure assignment to the damage control field remain aboard Great Lakes to attend ten weeks of A school to prepare them for the basics of the job. The course consists of self-paced and group instruction with practic al application, according to the Navy COOL rating info card, and progresses from technical documentation and mechanical theory to the specifics of shipboard firefighting and damage control systems. Credentials and Career Outlook Once promoted to the grade of E-4, a sailor officially moves out of the fireman rating and into the damage control rating as a damage controlman third class (DC3). The Navy COOL rating card advises that although advancement opportunities are fair, initially getting into the small DC community is competitive, with only about 3,300 men and women in the rating altogether. Navy COOLlists the following civilian credentials related to the damage controlman field, for which the Navy may reimburse examination fees Certified in Disaster PreparednessCertified Incident Safety Officer- Fire SuppressionCertified Safety Instructor Senior LevelCertified Safety ProfessionalCertified Safety SpecialistHealth and Safety OfficerOccupational Health and Safety Technologist/Lo ss Control Specialist Damage controlmen can also apply for journeyman apprenticeship as firefighters or pump repairers through the United Services Military Apprenticeship Program.

4 Small Ways to Improve Your Career Every Day - The Muse

4 Small Ways to Improve Your Career Every Day - The Muse4 Small Ways to Improve Your Career Every DayIts super easy to think big in your career. Im going to achieve this ginormous goal. Ill develop 100 new skills. Ill reach the top level in my field. But the problem we face is that reaching those big goals feels impossible from wherbeie we stand today. So, one resolution Ive made for myself is to think smaller. Not to say I dont hold myself to high standards, but Im allowing myself to take easier, more bite-sized steps to get there.Want to know how? Here are four things I swore to do every day to improve my career this year- and I promise, theyre so simple youll be surprised you dont do them more often.1. ReadBefore you panic that Im asking you to dive into a new book every day, dont. Reading can mean a lot of different things. For me, it sometimes means checking out one in-depth blog post, while other days it means reading five pages of a book before bed.Smart people know that by keep ing up with industry news or downloading the latest professional development book, theyre always one step ahead of the game. Theyre constantly learning, and constantly engaging with new ideas, new voices, and new perspectives- and these further shape and stab und sttze the decisions they make. Plus, the only way youre going to become a better communicator is by witnessing good written communication first hand. So, make a vow to read something every day. Maybe you settle for five pages a night like me, then increase that number over time. Or, maybe you subscribe to popular publications in your field and spend your commute reading as much as you can. This isnt school, so dont make it feel like work- rather, engage with material that inspires and motivates you to be and do better.2. ConnectChances are you check social media daily, if not more often. What Ive found, however, is that I dont spend enough time actually talking to people on these platforms. Youve heard the usual career advic e, like reach out to a stranger on LinkedIn or email your network to grab coffee. But realistically, were not going to do that every day (how exhausting would that be?). However, theres something called keeping your networking warm, and its just as important- things like commenting when someone changes their job status on LinkedIn, sending a private Facebook to a colleague who just got engaged, or texting an old friend to catch up. While they may not directly impact your career now, they keep the door open for when you may need something later on. Maybe youll need that rolle to serve as a reference, and since youve stayed in close contact you know theyll speak highly of you. Or, youll start a partnership with their company and because you get along so well, youre able to sell a bigger deal. When that time comes, you wont regret having spent two minutes a day nurturing that relationship.3. WriteIm an editor, so I dont normally throw the word write around loosely. However, just like r eading, I believe its so important to practice regularly- in no matter what fashion.I have a friend whos been journaling since the sixth grade. I dont think if you asked her why she continues to do it shed say because it helps her advance in her career. But I can tell you that this outlet has helped her process her feelings and clear her head better than any form of therapy out there. Its also how she keeps track of what she accomplishes. Shes kept every notebook shes filled since she first started journaling, and as a result she can look back on the past week, month, or year and see how far shes come (eighth grade crushes excluded).Maybe you also journal (or want to start). Or maybe you hate it like me, thats OK. But find ways to express yourself, your thoughts, and your ideas through writing. Start a blog, write a LinkedIn article, take on a freelancing project, track your accomplishments, write for your companys website, craft clever tweets, post on Facebook, contribute to a discu ssion group, create an idea journal. Form a paper trail you can be proud of and thatll also remind you how much youve grown and learned.4. Ask QuestionsThis is the easiest advice youll get all day.Ask your boss how they got where they are today, ask your colleague what theyre working on, ask a friend to explain a foreign concept to you, ask for help when you need it. Be curious- in meetings, while sitting at your desk, at events, over drinks. Always strive to learn more and understand what you dont know. Theres truly no such thing as a dumb question (in fact, itll only make you look smarter), and if you dont ask now youll only look back later and wish you had.Seems almost too simple, right? But if youre someone who tends to get lazy when it comes to your career, these are great places to start. After all, how hard can it be to read, write, connect with, and ask about one thing a day? Try it out and let me know how it goes on Twitter.

5 Signs Youre Ready for a Professional Resume Rewrite

5 Signs Youre Ready for a Professional Resume Rewrite5 Signs Youre Ready for a Professional Resume RewriteYou might need a resume rewrite, and you might need help from a professional, but you might leid be ready to work with one.Maybe your resume hasnt attracted the attention from recruiters that you thought it might.Does the work experience on your resume seem to stop short in 1997? Are you in a rut trying to figure out how to transfer your skills to a new industry? These scenarios are clear signs that its time to update your resume. Can you do it on your own? Employing a resume writer to help can be a positive experience - if youre prepared to work collaboratively and have realistic expectations. Below are five signs youre in the right place to begin a resume project with a professional resume writer.1. You have time to be part of the process.Resume writing is a very collaborative process. Expect to spend time being interviewed by the writer or completing some sort of questionnaire so the writer can gather the appropriate information. It isnt enough to forward a copy of your old resume and expect them to glean the best information from it. If you are extremely busy, under an enormous amount of stress or just not interested in working collaboratively, this might not be the best time to embark on an overhaul of your resume with a professional resume writer.2. Youve spent time thinking about the value you can bring to an employer. The writers job is to best represent you and advertise the benefits you can bring to an organization. But she can only write from the information you supply. A good writer will ask targeted questions to unearth the key information she needs to write a strong resume. You must be willing to be introspective about your past experience. You need to start thinking less about your job tasks and more about what makes you good at what you do. If you wait until the day you discuss what you have accomplished with your writer, you are sure to omit key information or forget something that could help the writer do a better job.3. You dont expect your writer to embellish your skills. If you have an expectation that the writer is there to embellish your experience or suggest you have competencies you dont, forget about it. An ethical writer will only create a true representation of your skills. We dont make up stuff.4. You are ready to let go of outdated information and early-career experience listed on your resume. If you are so attached to the great work you did on a Y2K project in 1999 or your stellar GPA in 1982, you will struggle with one of the real benefits of working with a writer the ability to look at all of your accomplishments objectively and showcase the ones that have the most relevance in the current market. Approach the process with an open mind and let the writer help you make decisions about the content what to keep and what to toss.5. You dont expect your resume to look just like the sample on the Web site.Dont get me wrong. Its a great idea to review sample resumes to get an idea of a writers style. But dont expect your resume to look like the one on the sample page. That resume represents someone elses experience. Your resume must represent you and you alone. Your resume wont stand out if its the saatkorn as every other drive-thru hamburger stand. Imagine the resume-writing process as a salad bar that mixes and matches the best choices for each individual.

How To Negotiate Your Pay And Get The Raise You Deserve

How To Nselbsttiate Your Pay And Get The Raise You Deserve How To Negotiate Your Pay And Get The Raise You DeservePosted September 15, 2016, by Zahra Campbell-AvenellGoing to the dentist. Taking your first driving test. Delivering a speech in front of 1,000 people. You know whats even more nerve-racking? Negotiating your salary. Most people find even the idea of bringing up their salary to be incredibly intimidating. And guess what? Employers know this, which helps them lowball you. Whether youre negotiating a pay rise for a new job, as part of your performance review, or simply because your remuneration doesnt reflect your current responsibilities, youre doing yourself a massive disservice by settling for the salary thats first put on the table. I know its awkward. Its definitely challenging. It can even be excruciating. But that doesnt mean you shouldnt try. A study published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior showed that people who negotiated their starting sala ry increased it by an average of $5,000. While $5,000 may leid seem like very much compared to the agony of negotiating with your current or future anfhrer, it adds up over the course of your working life. The study revealed that the cost of elend negotiating your salary over your career could be a whopping $600,000 Would you say no if I wrote you a cheque for $600,000? I didnt think so. Since each subsequent raise (as well as your retirement fund balance) tends to be based on a percentage of your salary, its worth negotiating your salary at every opportunity and getting the practice to boot, so you become a stellar negotiator over time. Negotiation is both an art and a science, and the good news is that it can be learned We combed through dozens of scientific studies for proven methods to help you up your negotiation game, and added on some tips from pro recruiters with over 40 years of recruitment experience between them.Ready? Lets do this1. Do your homework. If you do on e thing, make it this. And when you think youre done, do some more. The importance of research in a negotiation canelend be overstated. You need to be armed with as much information as possible these days, theres no excuse not to be. Use websites such as payscale.com, glassdoor.com.au, and talk to people in the industry (including present or future coworkers if possible). This should give you a fairly decent idea of what people in similar roles are getting. Recruiter and Head of Talent at Ansarada, Emma Jones, says, All negotiations must come from a place of knowledge, preparation and authenticity to have the greatest gunst der stunde of successful outcomes. The cost of not thinking it through properly can have dire consequences for your career, so its worth putting in the prep time. While some organisations have banned workers from discussing salaries, there is a movement underway to make information more transparent. As of August 2016, 13 US states have made it illegal to prev ent employees from comparing salaries, and companies like Buffer are making all salaries public. The more well prepared you are, the more confident youll feel making the first offer and anchoring the odds in your favour (see number 5). Compensation usually reflects the responsibilities, performance, market rate and ROI of the person hired, so dont worry about what you are getting paid right now as much as what you should be paid. Treat each salary review with the same gravity as you would a job interview the purpose is the same, after all to sell yourself and demonstrate your worth.2. Know your worth and your walk away figureOnce youve done your research, you need to know what YOU bring to the table. What skills, experience, training, attributes or personality traits do you have that would be hard for an employer to find? Equally important, what will it cost them to find another candidate like you? Once you have an idea of your market value, calculate how much you will need to be able to cover your rent or mortgage, loans and expenses. You need to know the bare minimum that you would be willing to accept, otherwise negotiating is a waste of time. For the right combination of benefits and experience, you might be willing to go below the market rate but youll have to decide if this is right for you. Jarka Kunova, a recruiter and Operations Manager at Newscorp says, Be confident but not aggressive and know what is important to you in order to feel happy in your role Value comes in all forms, not just as a salary. In the negotiation, it cant hurt to mention that you have other offers (if its true), and this will be your biggest leverage. A scarce resource is always valued higher than one that is easily available, and the employer has already invested time and resources to recruit or train you.3. Get a confidence boostIt can be really easy to get tongue-tied in a stressful situation. If youre prone to nerves, try putting yourself (metaphorically) in someone els es shoes. Imagine that youre a different person, and adopt the persona of this confident person before you go in for the negotiation. Research published in the journal Social Cognition demonstrated that priming yourself by thinking of someone who is stereotypically good at something will make you better at it as well. So visualise a powerful negotiator (e.g. Barack Obama) before you go into your negotiation, and youll be poised to kick some serious butt. Here are some tips on how to become more confident.4. Focus on the first 5 minutesThe first 5 minutes are crucial in any negotiation, so bring out your most assertive, gregarious self. Use your confident, strong alter ego to drive the discussion. Spend a few minutes before the discussion adopting some power poses that have been shown to help increase testosterone (a hormone that makes you feel more dominant) and decrease cortisol (a hormone that makes you feel more stressed). Frame your discussion in terms of your performance, a nd relate this to the companys success. Remember that the companys focus will be its bottom line, not your financial constraints or how much you deserve the raise. Be pleasant and likeable but assertive. Stay positive say how much you enjoy (or would enjoy) working at the company, and what you bring (or have brought) to the table. Then you can start talking turkey.5. Anchor your precise number and go firstAfter youve done your research, you should have a specific figure in mind, rather than a ballpark. Multiple studies have shown that such anchor numbers pull judgements towards themselves, which is why social psychologists recommendstarting high. Starting higher than youd expect allows room for concessions, and also lets the other side feel like theyve won. A Columbia Business School study also suggests coming up with a precise number rather than rounding up or down to make your anchor more potent (say, $63,500 rather than $60,000 - $65,000) because it shows that youve done you r research. Similarly, studies have demonstrated that making your arguments first could sway the negotiation in your favour.6. Be aware of the gender biasIts common knowledge that women get paid approximately 75 cents for every dollar men earn, but until recently, this trend was attributed to the fact that women just dont ask for raises as often.A September 2016 study of 4600 Australian workers showed that this simply wasnt the case while women asked for raises just as frequently, men were more likely to get them. So if youre a woman, what can you do about this information? According to Harvard Law Schools excellent free resource Negotiation Strategies for Women Secrets to Success, women should start higher frame their demands in terms of its benefits to others and reference objective, relevant data (see 1).7. Get a cuppa for your bossAccording to the misunderstood and oft-misquoted study in the European Journal of Social Psychology, caffeine consumption leads to greater agreement in a negotiation. This means that youre more amenable to ideas after youve had your coffee (I couldve told you that for free). So it cant hurt to have your negotiation conversation over a cup of coffee. Bonus holding a hot drink will help your boss have more generous feelings towards you. Of course it may be less easy to do this in an interview situation, but you should definitely try buying your boss a warming cup of tea or coffee at your next performance review (and get yourself an iced decaf)8. Time it rightThis one is particularly important. While many employers will force you to confirm your salary expectations before youve even had a chance to interview, try and push the question of money to the last possible moment. If youre applying for a new job, ask them what the budget is for the role, and explain that you need an understanding of the bigger picture but youre happy to consider any reasonable offer. For an existing employer, make sure that you time your negotiation around th e financial year, or before your appraisal (salary increases are often decided long before performance reviews).Be overprepared (see 1) know your market value, the companys financial performance, industry conditions and your documented achievements both quantifiable ones (signing on a new client suggesting a cost-saving improvement) and less tangible ones (training new employees improving workflows). This will help you anticipate potential objections and show that you have business acumen, which is invaluable to any organisation.9. Show that youre actively listeningIt can be tempting to go into a negotiation, guns blazing, just waiting for the other side to stop talking so you can disarm them with your perfectly rehearsed arguments. badeanstalt idea According to FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss, the best way to succeed in a negotiation is to listen actively to the other party, empathise with their point of view, build rapport, influence their behaviour and then close. It also hel ps to mirror their body language and phrases to reach an agreement. Voss suggests paraphrasing what the other party is saying to confirm that you understand where they are coming from, and to move towards common ground.10. Stay on top of indirect negotiationsIf someone else is negotiating on your behalf (e.g. a recruitment agency), its very important that you maintain control over the communications. This means asking a lot of questions of the agency when you get started. Make sure that youre completely transparent about what you want, and that you can trust them to represent you. Since agents are usually paid a percentage of your starting salary as their commission, they may strong-arm an employer into offering you more than you asked for, which could result in the employer choosing another candidate. Dont be afraid to talk to more than one recruiter to find one you can really trust to be on your side.11. Have a Plan BWhat happens if despite all your preparation, the employer bal ks at the very idea of negotiation? Guess what? They are trained to do just that, so be prepared to hear no for an answer at least once. While its safe to assume that theres a bit of wiggle room in the compensation package, you also need to know when to back off. As long as the dollar figure offered is within your walk away range, you can always try negotiating things like your hours, flexibility, bonuses, benefits, paid training or annual leave. If youre not happy with the reasons youre given, be sure to ask lots of questions to fully understand the situation so youre even better prepared next time. But even if you leave with nothing more than what you walked into the room with, congratulate yourself anyway. Before entering a salary negotiation, know your BATNA (Best Alternative To A Negotiated Agreement), a term coined by Roger Fisher, William Ury and Bruce Patton in the seminal book Getting to Yes Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In. Depending on your personal circumstances and the package on offer, you can consider accepting an alternative offer or even quitting your job. Of course you shouldnt disclose your BATNA to your employer particularly if this involves leaving.Negotiating is like flexing a muscle the more you do it, the easier it will get. Remember that your goal is to reach a goal that is mutually satisfying, so be willing to make some concessions, and look for creative solutions to find a win-win situation.Like this article? 5 ways to win with passive-aggressive people

5 ways to win with passive-aggressive people5 ways to win with passive-aggressive peoplePassive-aggressive people. You know the type. They never say they wont do something. They agree but then, aw shucks, the dog ate their homework and, of course, its elend their fault. They never ask for what they want. They whine or charm or sulk until you offer. But they didnt ask, so they dont owe you anything. Hey, you offered. And they claim to be the kindest personin the world. Would never hurt a fly. But they attack others - always with plausible deniability. Its nevertheir fault. Theyre bedrngnislage a bad person. In fact,at least according to them, theyre always the victim. Clinical psychologist Randy Patersonexplains passive-aggressive behavior asIn all cases you get your own way, but you have a plausible excuse that allows you to escape taking responsibility for your actions. You manage to avoid being confronted by those who are affected. If they try to confront you, you can always deny any intent (No, I really wanted to be on time, but the bus welches late.)These people will drive you crazy. So what do experts recommend you do to win with these types?Lets get to it . . .(Im not asking you to keep reading. I dont care if you read another word. But, if you areso inclined, go right ahead. Now its true thatone time someone didnt finish reading something I wrote and I was so upset I was hospitalized for a month - but dont feel obligated in any way. I wouldnt want to be a burden. Totally up to you. Do whatever you think is right. Im just trying to help)Whats the verstndigung im strafverfahren with passive-aggressive people?Well-adjusted people are assertive. Theyll explain why they cant help orask for what they want. Aggressive folks will respond to requests with a flatNo and will happily steamroll you to achieve their goals. Other people are passive. Theyll cave and do what you tell them, or give up on what they desire rather than ask for it.And then we have the passive-a ggressive bunch theyre not going to say no, but theyre not going to follow through either. Theyre not going to ask for what they want, but thats not going to stop them from trying to get it.FromEmotional Vampires Dealing with People Who Drain You DryThe more these hapless vampires like, respect, or fear you, the less able they are to say directly, Im angry or I dont want to do that. They have to rely on misunderstanding, forgetting, or falling apart to do the job for them. Thats the way it is accept it or pay the price. The most frequent cause of headaches is pursuing the one goal that is absolutely unattainable with Histrionic vampires- having them admit to their actual motives. Most passive-aggressives live in a fantasy world of denial. They dont want to be seen as a bad person but they dont want to do unpleasant things. But if the unpleasant things dont get done because of an accident, well, its not their fault, and theyre nota badperson.FromEmotional Vampires Dealing with People Who Drain You DryIn their minds, they are good children- innocent, happy, eager to please, and always willing to do more than their share. Real people are complex, full of base motivations and unacceptable desires as well as the stuff of angels. Passive-Aggressive Histrionics have the frightening capacity to deny any but the most superficial and attractive thoughts. They blithely ignore the ugly stuff even if its plainly visible to everyone else. Histrionics are not perfectionists, theyre more like perfectionist wannabes. They dont necessarily want to be perfect they just want to look perfect Normal people recognize that they cant act on their impulses. Passive-Aggressive Histrionics try to believe that they have no inappropriate impulses to act on. This is what makes them dangerous.Theyre perpetually innocent. And if you accuse them, youre a bully. Theyre always the victim. Now there is another typeaggressives who use passive-aggressiveness as a deliberate strategy to act likejerksa nd not be held accountable. Modern corporate culture has come down hard on aggressive behavior. While noble, this has just driven it underground. Shouting is verboten, so they manipulate youinstead. So whats the best way toidentifya passive-aggressive as early as possible? Look for a past that resembles Hurricane Katrina. These types often leaveawake of devastation behind them. Of course, it wasnt their fault. They were the victim. But if someone keeps having bad luck again and again and again thats not bad luck.See them coming and you might be able to stop them from bleeding you dry. And thats why clinical psychologist Albert Bernstein refers to them as vampires.FromEmotional Vampires Dealing with People Who Drain You DryOften these vampires have a history of interpersonal problems that, according to them, come out of nowhere to plague them. Their world is two-dimensional, full of villains and victims. In an interview they will usually tell you about personality conflicts in their pr evious job. On a first date they will tell you about their last dysfunctional relationship because youre a nice person and will understand. Be warned. Nice person or not, in their next interview or on their next first date, theyll be saying the same things about you.(To learn how to deal with a narcissist, click here.)Okay, we have met the enemy - and its never their fault. As with narcissists, subclinical psychopaths and other oh-so-pleasant folks, if you see them for what they are, the best way to deal with them is not to deal with them. Run.But there are many cases where that just isnt an option, like the office. So what do you do about it?1. Dont give inTheyre giving you a migraine. Theres always an excuse. They are always the victim. Wouldnt it just be easier to give inso theyshut up and go away? No.Dont give them what they want. Now youre rewarding the puppy for pooping on the carpet. Guess whats going to happen next time they want something?FromEmotional Vampires Dealing with People Who Drain You DryIn the short run it seems easier not to deal with them at all and just do whatever they were supposed to do yourself. Big mistake. One of the reasons these vampires are so difficult is that most people deal with their passive tantrums passively, by absolving them of their responsibilities. This approach ensures that the next time there is something difficult to be done, Histrionics will again handle it by not being able to handle it.(To learn how to deal with psychopaths and other toxic people, click here.)Maybe if you can just get them to tell you what they want, you can break them of this terrible habit. Or maybe if you just explode on them you can show them how frustrating theyre being and theyll snap out of it.Wrong . . .2. Dont get angry or call them outIf you get furiousor make accusations, then youre a bully. Theyre always the victim, remember? So dont give them a plausible way of accusing you of being a bully. You dont want to end up on their enemies l ist. Not that theyre vindictive - theyre as pure as the driven snow - but your bullying behavior might be something HR should be aware of. You know, for the good of the company. After all, they just want to help. And trying to get them to take responsibility for their actions is a fools errand. Theyd have to admit theyre not sweet, kind and lovable. Theyd have to admit they have base desires. Not gonna happen.FromEmotional Vampires Dealing with People Who Drain You DryForget any attempt to make Passive-Aggressive vampires admit to what they really feel. Itll only make your headache worse. Dont make the mistake of demanding that they talk to you directly about problems. You might as well demand that they speak in rhyming couplets. There really are no battles you can win with the Passive-Aggressive. Once the situation turns into a battle, you have already lost. The battles you can win are all with yourself.(To learnhow a clinical psychologist recommends you handle difficult conversat ions, click here.)So you know what not to do. But whats the first step in getting this victim who has such horrible luck to behave the right way?3. Speak their languageYou need to express your needs intheir I-am-the-victim reality. Tell them it is truly awful that space aliens stopped them from taking care of that task they committed to. (Youve dealt with E.T. yourself, and you understand how difficult he can be.) You appreciate them doing their best, and were just going to need to try again.FromEmotional Vampires Dealing with People Who Drain You DryYour words must reflect an understanding of their view of the world, rather than demanding that they accept yours. These vampires live in an alternate reality where their thoughts are pure, their motives are selfless, and all their mistakes are caused by misinterpretation. That is where you must go to have any meaningful communication with them. Phrase everything in a way that doesnt assault their view of reality. Instead of criticizing , acknowledge that Passive-Aggressives were doing their best, then let them know how to do better. Dont even think of talking to them when youre angry. Theyll see it as verbal abuse.(To learn an FBI behavior experts secrets for getting people to like you, click here.)So youre talking to them in a way they wont reject. Now how do you get them to do what they should have already done?4. Be direct and always reward good behaviorDo what they cantbe direct about what you want. Otherwise, we now have two passive-aggressives dealing with one another. And while that might make a fantasticSNL sketch, its not something you want to be a part of. (Youll lose. They have a lot more practice at this than you do.)So be direct aboutwhat is expected and let contingencies do the work.FromEmotional Vampires Dealing with People Who Drain You DryIf you live or work with Passive-Aggressive Histrionics, you want them to do what theyre supposed to do, and not feel criticized and abused. At least not enough to retaliate. To accomplish this formidable goal, you and the vampire have to relate on the basis of clear, explicit expectations rather than any sort of unspoken agreements. You were clear about what you wanted and they followed through. Great. Nowheap on the approval theyve been craving. If this sounds like dog training, well, thats because it is dog training. So give Sparky a treat and a pat on the head.FromEmotional Vampires Dealing with People Who Drain You DryThe most productive goal with these vampires is preventing their Passive-Aggressive outbursts by giving them the approval they want, but making it contingent on specific behaviors. Never let them guess what you want the consequences are too great if they get it wrong. Tell Passive-Aggressives in explicit detail what it takes to please you and praise them profusely when they do it. The strategy is simple and almost foolproof, but it is seldom employed.(To learn the 4 rituals neuroscience says will make you happy, click here .)Some people will say that sounds all too simple. Now it does work, but maybe not immediately. So how do you punish bad behavior with someone who is itching to paint themselves as the victim and you as the jerk?5. Use response costsOvert punishment or retaliation wont work. That just feeds their narrative of Me Victim You Bully. But their bad behavior causes problems for you and it needs to causeproblems for them too. It was awful that a 747 crashed into the post office where they were supposed to mail that letter for you, and you feel terrible they had to suffer through that tragedy. But since it happened, theres now another step they need to complete.Filling out an incident reportor paying that late fee you incurred. Anything you can think upthat makes their accidental slip ups not worth the hassle in the future.FromEmotional Vampires Dealing with People Who Drain You DryIf there need to be negative consequences for breaking rules, the kind that work best are called response costs . They arent punishments theyre more like raising the price of messing up. If people forget to do something or do it incorrectly, make them do it over, especially when it would be easier to do it yourself. Creative practitioners may raise the price of misbehavior still further by adding paperwork- incident reports, remediation plans for absences, or whatever else they can think up.(To learn the 7-step morning ritual that will keep you happy all day, click here.)Okay, weve learned a lot. (I wanted to write more but I have just been so busy. Sorry about that. Couldnt be helped.) Lets round it all upSum upHeres how to win with passive-aggressive peopleDont give in If you show them this behavior works, you will get more of it. Period.Dont get angry or call them out Because then youre the meanie they always suspected you were. Meanie.Speak their language You know full well how awful it is when vikings prevent you from getting somewhere on time, so be understanding.Be direct and always re ward good behaviorFetch and you get a treat, Sparky.Use response costs When you dont pay parking tickets, the citydoubles the fine. Theyre so awful, arent they? Might wanna pay the ticket on time in the future.Ignore the excuses. Pay attention to actions, not words. You cannot control their behavior but you can control your response. How to End a Conversation When Networking

How to End a Conversation When NetworkingHow to End a Conversation When Networking5Thing is, its a networking no-brainer that you should be nice to everyone at the event. After all, todays boring conversationalist might be the gatekeeper to your job tomorrow. That doesnt mean that you should be chatting up someone and not establishing the connections you really need to make.Since weve all been there, here are three (kind) ways to end a conversation when networking1. Be honest. If youve been already speaking with the other partie for quite a few minutes, its perfectly acceptable to tell them that youre ready to move on. You can say something like, Its been wonderful meeting you, but there are a couple of other people I need to connect with before leaving the event. The person youre speaking with shouldnt feel offended and ultimately understand that the point of networking events is to make as many connections as possible.2. Offer to keep in touch. Youre actually having a great convers ation with someone youve met at a networking event- but the clock is ticking and youve only established one connection so far. If you like the person youre chatting up but know that you need to make the most of your time at the event, offer to stay in touch with him. You can say, Its been great speaking with you. Maybe we can continue the conversation at a later date? But only offer this option to the person if you genuinely want to keep the connection going.3. Create a new connection- for the other person. Lets say that youve been dropping hints to let the person know that you are ready to end the conversation. Youve stopped making as much eye contact as before, and youre slowly sliding your way towards the door. If your clueless conversation partner isnt catching on, an easy exit can be to reisepass the person onto someone else. Try connecting him with another person at the networking event that you know, and if you dont know anyone else, you can suggest that he meet up with one o f the events moderators. Then gracefully make your exit.It can be tricky to end a conversation, but when youre looking to build your network, every minute counts. So try to make the most of your conversations that you have at the event, and tactfully end the ones that just arent working for you.

How to Prove Your Leadership Skills on Your Resume

How to Prove Your Leadership Skills on Your Resume How to Prove Your Leadership Skills on Your Resume It is usually fairly easy to showcase your qualifications and hard skills on a resume, but demonstrating yoursoft skills can be quite a challenge. This is especially true in the case of leadership skills Its easy to say you have them, but its much more difficult to prove you do.Demonstrating your leadership skills is essential to landing many roles, especially those with supervisory or managerial duties. Here are five ways tocraft a more convincing portrait of your leadership skills on your resume1. Explain the Structures of Your Previous TeamsRecruiters will not know the organizational structures of your previous employers or how your previous standorts fit into them. A great way to quickly demonstrate your leadership skills is toexplain where your position fell in the company hierarchy and the type of people you led in that position. Youcan make this information quantifiable by writing about the number of people on your gruppe, the number ofpeople in total, and how your work fed into the business.ExampleManaged a team of 6 analysts, reporting directly to the managing director.2. Reference Your Delegation SkillsA good leader knows when to delegate and how to get the most out of their team members. Of course, when describing your delegation skills, be sure not to take attention away from your integral role in the project. Instead, your stories of delegation should showcase the fact that you were being an effective leader, not simply passing work off onto your subordinates. Keywords such as empower, appoint, mobilize, engage, and connect can show your delegation skills without taking the focus away from your own role as a leader.ExampleMobilized a team of 3 project managers to deliver 5 milestones, with a weekly reporting process for updates and issues.3. Talk About Leading From the FrontSure, having leadership skills means being able to encourage your team members to give their all, but the best leaders make their own contributions as much as they delegate. Showcasing your ability to lead by example is a great way to provide evidence ofyour leadership skills.Discuss past projects where you changed a process or encouraged others by the work youdid yourself. Some keywords you may want to use in this context include guide, coach, enable, and stimulate.Example Led a team with a sales revenue of $3 million, with myself personally contributing $550,000.4. Detail Your Teams AchievementsAn effective leaderis one who can develop an effective team and inspire it to reach its goals. In light of this fact, detailing your teams key achievements can be a good way to present your leadership skills in action. Structurementions of your team achievements with first-person pronouns (I and we), and highlight what you did and what your teamwas able to achieve because of your actions.Example By providing effective motivation and incentivization, I was able to increase team productivity by 15 percent.5. Describe How You Played a Key Role in Your TeamsEffectivenessWhile showcasing your teams achievements can help demonstrate your leadership skills, you have to be careful to emphasize your role in creating such an effective team. You dont want recruiters to assume you were simply lucky enough to walk onto a highly effective team that already existed. It is important that your resumes descriptions of your team keep the focus on your role in making it as effective as it was.ExampleRescued failing project that was behind schedule, ultimately allowing us to deliverit sixweeks ahead of completion.- If there is one key takeaway in all of this, it would be the following When discussing your leadership skills in your resume, it is essential to keep the focus on yourself, your input, and your results. It can be difficult not to approach your achievements with a team-oriented mindset, but remember Recruiters are hiring you, not your team.Andrew Fe nnell is the founder of UK-based CV-writing advice websiteStandOut CV.Master the species of closing deals and making placements.
